SQL A nonrecoverable I/O error occurred

So, if your in SQL Server and you go to backup your database and you get this error "A nonrecoverable I/O error occurredwhat does it mean ?

Well lucky enough its a simple one to fix, but the error is a bit vague, it means your out of space ! check how much free space you have where your backing the file up to and look at how big the database is your backing up.

Bye Bye MSN Messenger

I was looking online tonight and I found this story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28987797  and this markes the end for MSN messenger as we know it.

I was probably one of the first to use it back in 1999. Around that time I was using ICQ and AIM and a few other chat clients.  Me and my friends used to use Yahoo Chat a lot also. The problem was there was so many chat clients in the early 2000s that most of us had them all installed and running just so you could keep in touch with people. There was certain people who only used MSN and those who only used Yahoo and so on.  It was often my American friends that used AIM, so I had to run that as well.

For around 6-7 years I used AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and IRC and all open and running happy together.  The one I disliked the most was ICQ don't know why but I never liked it much.  I was a big fan of MSN, I used to make good use of the ability to log chats to text files, I still have all my Chats going back years saved in easy to read text files, they make for a good laugh every now and then.

So bye bye MSN Messenger I will miss you.  I have Skype, your new replacement but I don't keep it open, if friends want me they ring my mobile or Facebook message me, things have moved on.

Citrix on-line plugin for Internet Explorer and Firefox

Citrix on-line plugin that allows you to access Citrix via your web browser in Internet Explorer or Firefox.  Although this is dated 2010 it worked fine for me, I hit many dead links before getting to this one.

I was looking for this download this week and it took me some time to find it so I though I would share it with everyone.

MapiExceptionJetErrorLogDiskFull Error Exchange 2010

Here is an example of error "MapiExceptionJetErrorLogDiskFull" error
that I received when I tried to bring a database back online in Exchange
2010, this example and the screenshot is on a database store called "8GB
1". The problem here is that the exchange server log space for this
database is full. It was quite an easy one to fix as the clue is in the
error itself. Remember you can not really delete the exchange log files,
if you have a build up of log files then you will probably find you have
a problem with your backups. In this instance we were able to increase
the volume size for the logs so we could get this mailbox store back
online, then look at the reason why afterwards.

Untick The Use Proxy Server Tick In Internet Explorer

Here is how to tick and un-tick the use proxy server tick in Internet Explorer, this has been tested on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 but it will work on other versions also.  This maybe required if you are connecting via a corporate VPN and you need to disable and re enable the settings on a regular basis.

You can save the following into a .reg file that you can run when required.

Enable Proxy Server Tick Box

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001

Disable Proxy Server Tick Box

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

SHA2 and Windows XP and Windows 2003

Before Windows XP Service Pack 3 was released, there was no SHA2 functionality within Windows XP. With the release of Service Pack 3 some limited functionality was added to the crypto module rsaenh.dll. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 does not ship with support for SHA2.  It took me ages to figure this out, as you can get some strange errors or page not found etc and it will confuse you as to why you cant access a certain website.

Solution

On Windows XP ensure that you install Service pack 3 this will give you some limited functionality that was added to the crypto module rsaenh.dll.

On Windows 2003 download http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938397 Please be aware that it is not available via Windows Update it needs to be requested via the “View and request hotfix downloads” link.  You may also need to install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968730 if you need to enroll from a SHA2 certificate authority and process SHA2 certificates, KB 968730 completely supersedes KB 938397.

Apple has just announced it has agreed to acquire subscription streaming music service Beats Music, and Beats Electronics, which makes the popular Beats headphones, speakers and audio software. As part of the acquisition, Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple. Apple is acquiring the two companies for a total of $3 billion (US), consisting of a purchase price of approximately $2.6 billion (US) and approximately $400 million (US) that will vest over time. In just five years since launch, the Beats “b” has become the brand of choice in the music and sports worlds, and is the market leader in the premium headphone market. Subject to regulatory approvals, Apple expects the transaction to close in fiscal Q4.

Formally established in 2008 as the brainchild of legendary artist and producer Dr. Dre and Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records Jimmy Iovine, Beats Electronics (Beats) comprises the Beats by Dr. Dre family of premium consumer headphones, earphones, and speakers as well as patented Beats Audio software technology and streaming music subscription service Beats Music. Should You Use Registry Cleaning Utilities ?

Some products such as registry cleaning utilities suggest that the registry needs regular maintenance or cleaning.  However, serious issues can occur when you modify the registry incorrectly using these types of utilities. These issues might require users to reinstall the operating system due to instability. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved without a reinstallation of the Operating System as the extent of the changes made by registry cleaning utilities varies from application to application.

It has been a proven fact that you don’t need to clean the registry, it’s not like a defrag on your PC.  You gain nothing from doing this.  My experience of such programs over the past 20 years are that they are more trouble than they are worth, they cause problems, mostly with spyware or viruses.  Even the Wikipedia article on this subject states “Registry cleaners are not supported by Microsoft, but vendors of Registry cleaners claim that they are useful to repair inconsistencies arising from manual changes to applications, especially COM-based programs.” Full details here ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner )

This is the official Microsoft article on the use of such tools ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563254 ) There is also a very good blog post by Mark Russinovich from Microsoft talking about this topic (http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2005/10/02/registry-junk-a-windows-fact-of-life.aspx ) Most good software will have a un-installer that will remove both the program files and the registry data.

Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Virgin Radio 08.12.1998

Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Virgin Radio 08.12.1998 - PART 1 and 2 - 8.00am to 9.30am

I was in the loft and found some old tapes and started to listen what was on them, this one tape had a copy of the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on it from when he was at Virgin Radio, as stated above this was recorded on 08.12.1998 by myself from a AM radio to tape, but the quality is still good.

The show shows just how good Chris and his team really are, with the "Croacky Christmas" song and other features on this show.

Includes all the "team" Chris Evans, John Revell (Producer), Dan McGarath (Engineer), Jamie (Work Experience) and Holly Samos (aka Holly Hot Lips)

As I work in radio I have the professional kit to do the audio bit, so I transferred the audio from tape to 128k MP3 then added it to some video editing software and thrown a few images in and then uploaded it to Youtube.

Hope you enjoy, let me know your thoughts on this show !

Part 1 - 8.00am to 8.45am

Part 2 - 8.45am to 9:30am

Google And HTTPS Search's and Proxy Servers

This issue will really only affect people in a corporate environment where there is a requirement to log requests from Google and log on a proxy server what users search for. Back in Sept 2013 Google forced everyone to use HTTPS searches, this results in the search request not been logged on internal proxy servers etc. All requests to http://www.google.co.uk are been redirected to https://www.google.co.uk

Here is the steps to resolve this issue in a corporate environment :-

1. Open DNS, and select “Forward Lookup Zones”

2. Right click and “Create New Zone”

3. Create a new zone called www.google.co.uk

4. Once created go into that zone and create a “A” record to 216.239.32.20 you do not need to give this A record a name.

5. Repeat the above and create a new zone called www.google.com

6. Once created go into that zone and create a “A” record to 216.239.32.20 you do not need to give this A record a name.

7. Await DNS to update

If you now open a web browser and navigate to http://www.google.co.uk it will no longer be redirected to https://www.google.co.uk you will also notice that if users sign in via Google, it signs them in but will keep the connection as HTTP.

Windows XP End Of Life Support

Microsoft has said that after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to protect your PC.)

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

Delete hiberfil.sys Hibernate File Windows Vista

My main PC is Windows Vista and I’m getting a bit low on space, I needed to do some editing on a large audio file and during this it creates a massive temp file, and it kept filling my C drive up.  As a temp fix I found a way to temp disable Windows Hibernate mode.

The hibernate file just saves the state the machine was in when you put it into Hibernate mode, it is safe to delete.

  1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  2. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
  3. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
  4. At the command prompt, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off, and then press Enter.
  5. Type exit, and then press Enter to close the Command Prompt window.
I then deleted the hiberfil.sys file from the root of the C drive, this then gave me an extra 4Gb.

I did what I needed to do and then repeated the above procedure but this time typed powercfg.exe /hibernate on to re enable the Hibernate mode.

How to Transfer Text Messages From Samsung S2 to S4

Here is how I transferred all my text messages from my Samsung S2 to my Samsung S4.  Before I did this I transferred all my contacts over.

Please note there is a number of different ways to do this, as you will see if you read on-line this is how I did it.

1.  On the Samsung S2 open your contacts list, press the function button (bottom left) this will bring the menu up, select "Import/Export"

2. Select "Send namecard via"

3. Select all contacts, then click "Send"

4.  Select Bluetooth.  Ensure that Bluetooth is enable and visible on your Samsung S4.  You can now transfer them via Bluetooth.

5. Now onto the text messages, on both phones download a free app from the Google Play store called  SMS Backup & Restore ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore )

6. Open the application on the Samsung S2 and select "backup" you need to tell it where to backup to, I put a old SD card into the phone for this task.

7. Once this had done, I took the SD card from the S2 and put it in the S4 and repeated the step this time did restore.  It successfully restored over 3000 messages with no errors at all.
